Health care costs in 2017 were $3.5 trillion. This is “THE” single largest “INDUSTRY” in the United States. Health care represents nearly 18% of the American Gross Domestic Product (GDP). There are powerful groups that have a vested interest in making sure that this industry survives and grows.
In 1960, as a means of comparison, health care costs were $27.2 billion, which was 5% of GDP. By contrast, the 1960 cost per person was $146 versus $10,739 per person in 2017. Again, there are vested interests that wish to see health care costs grow.
